What was once the site of migrant camps and fruit-packing operations will soon become a gateway to Escondido’s downtown if a plan being developed for West Valley Parkway becomes reality.
City officials envision beautification projects and mixed-use developments in the area, a few blocks east of Interstate 15, costing millions of dollars.
Although city leaders like to consider Escondido’s downtown a regional destination, it isn’t for many people.
The freeway channels about 50,000 motorists onto West Valley Parkway every day, and the new Sprinter train drops off about 1,700 passengers daily at the Escondido Transit Center on West Valley.
