As both the Sheboygan Common Council and Sheboygan County Board begin new terms, it is time to re-energize the idea of sharing services and saving taxpayer money.

There has been some progress in this effort. Citizen members have been added to the panel and recently it was suggested to put Sheboygan’s mayor and the County Board chairman on the City-County Shared Services Committee as voting members.

The Common Council has already agreed to put the mayor on the committee. The County Board must do the same with its chairman.

But more than just being members of the committee, Mayor Juan Perez and newly chosen County Board Chairman Mike Vandersteen must be driving forces in getting meaningful discussion going. Without their strong leadership — and a will to succeed — the shared services committee will have a hard time making progress.
